GET ON YOUR BIKE

For the past couple of years French Women have been encouraged that the best way to keep their figures is to get on a stationary bike and pedal like mad.  Boring eh?  Not when this is the latest added result  ......

Sexist?  Possibly?  Fun?  Most Definitely!

LEAH GOTTLIEB WHO MADE SWIMWEAR SEXY

At DWS we spend most of our time trying to predict the (fashion) future but occasionally it's nice to look back, especially when it is to remember the passing of an design icon.  LEAH GOTTLIEB who 'checked out' of her atelier this week at the grand old age of 94 was never a household name BUT we owe her an enormous debt for her remarkable style and talent and her one unforgettable achievement : she made swimwear SEXY!

When she started off with a single sewing machine in a refugee camp in Israel just after WW2 I'm sure she had no idea then that she would end up selling more than a million swimsuits a year within 20 years.  Up till Leah came along swimwear was best described as utlitarian and was so very unflattering, but she came up with the un-heard of idea of actually making them glamourus!

Gottex her label was worn by Sports Ilustrated models, Royalty, movie stars ... she used velvet, metallic gold fabric and psuede-suede as some of her swimsuits got more about lounging than actually getting wet.  But she takes credit too that with her love of spandex she made bathing suits comfortable for women to wear too.

From Elizabeth Taylor to Princess Diane, Mrs Gottlieb was the go-to swimwear queen for decades, but more importantly women everywhere could have exactly the same outfits and (hopefully) look just as good as them.

Leah Gottlieb was a true star that made fashion such wonderful fun, and we honour her for that. We are sure she'll find some great beauties wearing Gottex creations in the great swimming pool in the sky.

THE KING IS DEAD

Actually technically speaking its  the clothing King who clothed 'THE King' who has sadly died. BERNARD LANSKY was already considered royalty by all the major Rhythm and Blues stars that he used to dress in Memphis, when in 1950 (ish) a young movie theatre usher looked longingly in the window of his Store.  The kid bought his high school prom outfit there, and when  he found fame as a singer , he couldn't get enough of Mr Lansky's outfits.

The 'kid' turned out to Elvis Presley who became The King of Rock 'n Roll.  To us at D.W.S., Elvis's sense of fashion was every bit as crucial as his music, and thanks to the early start he got at 'Lansky Bros' store, became a real style icon.

Presley was a great advertisement for Mr Lansky and throughout the 1950's and 1960's many of his musician friends also shopped there too inc. Carl Perkins, Isaac Hayes, The Beach Boys, Johnny Cash, The Jacksons etc.

Mr Lansky was not responsible for all the sparkly jumpsuits The King adopted in later years, but he did make the white suit that Elvis was buried in. 'I put him in his first suit, and I put him in his last suit!'

We salute you BERNARD LANSKY for your major contribution to making men's clothing so wonderfully stylish and such fun too.  We hope you get to hang out with Elvis again now.

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT & MRS OBAMA

Our M.D. didn't just follow the US Elections very intently, but as a newly naturalised American he actually got to vote too (albeit in Florida where as we write, they are STILL counting!  LOL)  It was a remarkable victory for an outstanding man whose strong leadership has not only helped the USA  .... and the World  ... gradually recover from this vicious global recession, but has done so with a great moral commitment to include and improve the equality and rights of all the country's citizens.

Barak Obama is the US President that we deserve, and the right man to lead us forward for the next four years.

On a lighter note, we at D.W.S. take our professional hats off to Michelle Obama, not just for the fact that she is the most stylish First Lady for years, but for   the that she sticks to her principles and chooses to  clothes not from high-flying international brands but from relatively unknown new designers that she respects and wants to encourage. We loudly applaud Mrs Obama for that as discovering and supporting new talent is something that is very dear to us at D.W.S.

RAVE REVIEWS

Spotted shopping at the D.W.S. Menswear Sale was actor TIM McINNERY who's just received rave reviews for his performance as The Doge of Venice in Howard Barker's 'SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION' currently playing in repertory at The Royal National Theatre.  'The Independent' called him 'wonderfully absurd' and the 'Evening Standard's Critic wrote 'he is a constant pleasure to watch'.

Tim as The Doge, NOT when he was shopping!

Tim has been a regular customer at D.W.S. for years and as usual left with several bags of goodies this time.  He claimed some were early Christmas gifts, but as he raved about what a fun time he had with us, we were more than happy.

He was shopping with acclaimed documentary filmmaker JAKE AUERBACH who just so happens to be the boyfriend of Tim's sister actress LIZZY McINNERY.  It was Jake's second visit this month as he and Lizzy were also spotted at our WOMENSWEAR SALE just last week.

Shopping at our SALES has always been a family affair even for our our more well-known customers and they especially know that at D.W.S. you never need to pay full price to look fabulous.

GUESS WHO'S WEARING DWS CLOTHES THIS WEEK?

Yep, Oscar nominated actress KEIRA KNIGHTLY none the less.  To be totally truthful she wasn't actually spotted lurking between the packed rails herself but JILL TAYLOR was with her arms laden with clothes. Ms Taylor is an award-winning costume designer (and D.W.S. habituee too!) and was shopping on Sunday for some rather glamorous slinky numbers for Ms Knightly to wear in the new film she is currently filming in the UK with none other than KENNETH BRANAGH ... who's directing it and starring too.  Well, the real male star (in our eyes) is CHRIS PINE one of the latest Hollywood heartthrobs who can actually act too, but our older clients may get more excited by the news that KEVIN COSTNER is also  co-starring.

The movie is called 'JACK RYAN' who sharp-eyed filmgoers will know was the name of HARRISON FORD'S character in 'PATRIOT GAMES' (also written by TOM CLANCEY) and we think this is maybe a prequel or sequel ... but I guess we better wait and see.

The last movie that Ms Taylor's was the Costume Designer for became such a favourite of ours ' MY WEEK WITH MARILYN' starring Michelle Williams.  Now there was someone we would have really have loved to meet.  And Ms Williams too.

Jill Taylor knows that she can get a whole array of wonderful clothes under our roof in one afternoon, and it also helps her budget go so much further.

Watch out for the film when it is eventually released and when you see how stunning Keira Knightly looks remember, at D.W.S. 'you never have to pay full price to look fabulous'.

DIANA VREELAND : THE EYE MUST TRAVEL

D.W.S. recommends the wonderful new documentary on the late great DIANA VREELAND  which is now showing in London.   Our M.D. is a big movie buff and here is his review reprinted from his BLOG:-

Diana Vreeland was the Queen Bee of Fashion: a Demi-God of Style who reigned supremely from her different ‘thrones’ of power for five decades and single-handedly changed the way women dressed.  You may think that a brash statement but it is totally befitting of this large-than-life style maverick whose influence at the helm of both Harpers and Vogue was matched by her outlandish statements and opinions.  To Ms. Vreeland, everything was black and white: there was no grey.

This wonderful tribute documentary by Lisa Immordino Vreeland(the wife of her grandson) pieces together some of the parts of her life.  I add some of the parts because besides from the 'big jobs' that she was renowned for, the movie uncovered a wealth of facts about her life that are totally surprising and that she barely touched on.  There are far too many to list here but Ms. Vreeland claims to have gone shooting with Buffalo Bill (‘marvelous fella’) in the Rockies when she was a kid; danced with the Tiller Girls (the UK’s Rockettes) in the 1930’s; sold Wallis Simpson some couture lingerie for a weekend with the King; waved to Lindbergh as he flew over her house on his famous flight etc etc.  When one of the Vreeland son’s (now in his 80’s) added that he knew for sure that last fact was not true as their house was not on his fight path, he confessed that his mother loved to improve her stories which he simply called ‘faction’.

Born in Paris to an American socialite and a British businessman Diana lived in Europe until the outbreak of World War 1, but even when the family settled back in the US, Paris would always be her first love. She married Reed Vreeland, a Banker in 1922 and they lived in London until 1937 in which time she made her mark in British society, although she always claims that the best thing about living in London was … Paris …especially as she was getting her clothes fitted personally by Mlle Chanel.

Back in New York she caught the eye of legendary magazine editorCarmel Snow who offered her the job of writing what turned out to be an outrageous column called ‘Why Don't You’… imposing her own somewhat outlandish take on fashion on the hapless readers ofHarpers.

Her life then really took off … she metRichard Avedonwho she worked with for the next 40 years, and he was just one of the many fashion heavyweights that she collaborated with over the next five decades.  As evidenced in detail by the film, the work that she produced there as Editor, and then in the top seat at Vogue was outstandingly wonderful.  She threw the rule book out of the window on every single aspect of doing fashion spreads and the pages of her magazines were crammed full of stunning photography shot in exotic places which were simply beautiful works of art.

More importantly what the movie so accurately portrays is that these were not just pictures of clothes but real visionary concepts that placed fashion in context with the remarkable world that she wanted people to relish and enjoy.

They were extravagant pieces and having no interest in keeping an eye on the bottom line or appeasing advertisers (like the Ms. Wintour of today's world does to the detriment of magazines!) cost Ms. Vreeland her job at Vogue.   Bereft at 70 years old and totally unwilling to even think about retiring she leapt at the chance theMetropolitan Museum offered to run the Costume Institute.   The amazing success she achieved there over her years at the helm is well documented and dealt with in the film, but what I really enjoyed were the behind the scenes stories like how she commissioned a hapless assistant to make a pompadour wig with a frigate in it and demanded it 'bigger and bigger'.

Her sons found her distant, fashion industry notables (such as Oscar De la Renta, Calvin Klein, Manolo Blahnik) adored and respected her, and her staff feared her.  She was in every sense of the word a real diva and a fashion icon and her legacy is how she made people think outside of the box in terms of style and how she always invested her joie de vivre in it at all times.

Bruce Weber had attempted to film a memoir on Diana V  before, and now that Lisa Immordino Vreeland has succeeded at last, and so brilliantly, anybody with the tiniest inkling for style should be indebted to her.  My only regret is that I wish I could see all the material that never made the final cut as I am sure there are a whole wealth of more hilarious anecdotes and eccentric quotes.

P.S. In the 1995 film 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar', drag queen Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) gives a copy of Vreeland's autobiography to a thrift-store clerk and tells him to "commit sections to memory." Later, the clerk quotes a passage that reads "That season we were loaded with pizazz. Earrings of fuchsia and peach. Mind you, peach. And hats. Hats, Hats, Hats, for career girls. How I adored Paris."

L'WREN SCOTT debuts @ DWS

We are sure that everyone will be queuing at the next WOMENSWEAR DESIGNER WAREHOUSE SALE when L’ WREN SCOTT will be making her debut.

L’ WREN SCOTT started out in the fashion world as a model (at 6’3”) and spotted by Bruce Webber at the age of 18 and soon was off to Paris to work with fashion legends THIERRY MUGLER and CHANEL. Then returning to California in the early 90’s as a stylist for the likes of renowned photographers Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton. This close association with style over the years came to fruition when L’WREN launched her own fashion label in 2006. This first collection was an array of “Little Black Dresses” and was an instant success, especially her signature ‘Headmistress’ dress. So much so Madonna wore it with her boyfriend of the time, Jesus Luz, in a photo shoot for W magazine. She has also been in a long term relationship with Mick Jagger. A true jet setter.

She is a designer of exquisite clothes and accessories which reflect her own impeccable personal style. Sleek and chic her designs make women look and feel fabulous. The collections are all designed in England and made in Italy, sold world wide and worn by many stars on the International red carpets. And we are thrilled to be the First and Only Sale  selling this unique Collection and all at 70% OFF the regular retail prices.

DANIEL BLAKE IS BACK

D.W.S was established 25 years ago by our M.D., who was then a Menswear Designer, primarily to support and work with the crème of the crop of British Fashion Designers.  Over the years as we have expanded to become this Country’s Leading Designer Sale we have incorporated the very best International Designers so we are now carry a veritable ‘who’s who’ in fashion.  However our first love  will always be talented British designers, and there are  a whole world of them out there that we plan to bring to you.

A few years back we ‘discovered’ DANIEL BLAKE an ex graduate from Kingston University who cut his (fashion) teeth working for SARA STURGEON (which we carried big time for years) and MAX MARA before he broke out on his own.  By the time we came across him he was already a rising star in Stores like LIBERTY and so when we had one his first collections at D.W.S. we literally sold out ever single piece.

Daniel describes his clothing as “timeless, investment pieces”, and the type of women who currently wear his clothes, as ranging from urban high flyers to contemporary artisans.  He explains, “The cut, quality and workmanship of my pieces means that women of a certain 'style' would be attracted to wearing the collection.'' We agree with him that these are 'investment pieces' that we believe a diversity of women would want for themselves.

We are overjoyed to have him back with us at this September Womenswear Sale …. Be warned however, it is a Sample Collection of One-Off Original Pieces and it will sell out fast. And think of this too, they are All Made in Britain!
